Criteria not met

In the early hours of the morning, before I am greeted by the sun and abandoned by the moon..

Insomnia keeps me company and listens attentively as I pour out the secrets of my heart and the melancholy carried by my spirit..

As I give life to my thoughts, they carry me away like waves on the sea shore, and I find myself drowning in the waters of insecurity and unrequited love..

How dare I have the audacity to assume that I was worthy of love when all I’ve ever been is broken..

Was my scrawny boyish body not a clear enough indication that I was undeserving of the soft and gentle love meant for those with curves matching the crescent moon presented to them as gifts..

My dark skin could never meet the cream coloured requirements necessary to be taken out for dinner or shown off..

Maybe if I was lighter..

Maybe if I was thicker..

Maybe if I was taller..

Maybe if I was prettier..

Maybe if I was quieter..

Maybe if I was more agreeable..

Maybe if I was more sane..

Maybe if I was less troubled..

Maybe if I wasn’t me..
