Is Carrie Bradshaw the face of Toxic Femininity

Over the last few years, toxic masculinity has become a mainstay in our everyday vernacular. With examples of it popping up left right and centre, it has been easy to identify. But with all the examples of the most toxic traits men can present, it got me thinking is it possible for women to show these toxic traits too?

I mean, of course, it is possible. Male or female we are all human and capable of the worst types of behaviour.

In order to identify toxic feminity, I thought I would choose a feminist icon (for some) from the early 00s as a character study. Carrie Bradshaw, a hopeless romantic or the pinnacle of toxic feminity?

She admonished Aidan for being a nice guy

When Aidan stepped on the scene, he was a breath of fresh air. He was so different from the men Carrie has been with in past seasons. He respected Carrie and took things slowly — so obviously, Carrie thought there was something wrong with him.

In Drama Queens, Carrie starts to needle at Aidan for being too nice and tries to find something wrong with him. She berates him for ‘acting cute’ when she voices her pointless concerns. Aidan is ready to introduce her to his parents without playing games and she freaks out because of her past relationship with Mr Big. She makes amends with him without really apologising for actions.

She refused to listen to Mr Big

From the get-go, Mr Big told Carrie what he wanted from a relationship. He has been through a divorce and isn’t looking to jump into anything serious quickly. Instead of listening to him, Carrie tries to force him to change.

She was too insecure to date a bisexual man

Obviously, not all of the storylines in SATC have aged well. Case in Point in “Boy, Girl, Boy, Girl”, Carrie dates Sean who tells her that he dated a man in the past. Carrie is meant to be a progressive sex columnist but she instantly has an issue with this.

From the point of his admission, Carrie’s insecurities jump out and she is constantly concerned about who he is checking out. Regardless of him putting her at ease because he is with her, she continues to mistrust him.
