Riots are Actually Rebellions

America needs to know this

I hate writing these.

In the month of May 2020, the whole world discovered the murder of George Floyd — by the hands of a police officer, Derek Chauvin. Three other cops functioned as accomplices and allowed Officer Chauvin to murder this man in cold blood, under his knee. George Floyd was 46 years old at the time of his murder. Because of Officer Chauvin, George was killed literally by the Weight of Oppression.

I question a lot of things. One thing that is not of question is the fact that George Floyd was needlessly murdered by an officer of the law. He wasn’t the first black person to be murdered by cops. Sadly, won’t be the last.

Days after the murder of George Floyd, riots ensued.

Minneapolis was burning.

The very concept of “riot” is fascinating. Riot, as a word, came from the old French word riote, and it meant “debauchery, extravagance, wanton living.” From Medieval Latin — the French language’s root — the word riota meant quarrel, dispute, uproar. Possibly its core word came from the Latin word rugire which means, to roar. The meaning being public disturbance is a modern concept.

If you look at the short history of the word riot and analyze the reason riots occur you might notice something. The moment you push across the 1900s and go farther back in time you’ll realize that riots didn’t exist. Is this even possible?

How in the world could riots only exist in the modern world? It’s not like it’s a technological feat that literally could not have existed prior to its existence, like say a helicopter. Riots are something humans do. Does all of this mean riots are new? Human beings have only been upset with their political leadership only recently?

No. Riots used to be called rebellions. Ever research slave rebellions and realized they are not called slave riots? Exactly. All of those were revolts. Rebellions.
