Why There Is No School of Life to Teach Us Better Living

We Need Formal Education on Life

I am an Engineering graduate. I and my mates know nothing about life. We have the most awkward social skills. I learned about complex theories of telecommunication and physics in 4 years. But never in our student life, from school till I graduated, was I educated formally on how to live a life as a person.

We have a very meticulously designed education system. And by we, I mean the whole world. Some countries have better than others but anyone who stays in the system for about 16 years graduates with a fair amount of advanced knowledge. The knowledge that never touches below the surface of how the world in general and individual in particular exists.

Maybe if I had taken humanities, sociology, or cultural studies I wouldn’t hold the same view. Anyone with these degrees can comment better. But I can tell you that students who opt for science-based degrees have a very tiny idea of what’s going outside of their knowledge domain.

I am not trying to establish or open the discussion about schools vs. skills. I think both are great. But I am obsessed with why people with advanced degrees have so pathetic knowledge about self-awareness and life. Everything I learned about how to live my life I owe to self-improvement books.

Schools and colleges only teach about social behaviour like how everything should be. What is right and what is wrong, what should be done and what should be avoided. In short, they teach idealism. The purpose is to instill good values in us so when we go out and live our lives. The problem is that they tell us Nada about what is the reality. The knowledge we receive is only one side of the picture.

When a kid joins school she doesn’t even know how to hold a pencil. By the time she graduates from high school, she is writing masterpiece essays, poetry, drawing beautiful sketches or scenes or gathered a respectable knowledge about plants, animals, and different species.
