Nap Queen

Grown-ups need their beauty sleep too!

Ever since I had an issue with my health this spring I have embraced The Nap. It is as if I am trying to catch up with all those naps I missed out on when I gave them up cold turkey as a two-year-old.

I am the first to volunteer to lay down with my middle grandchild to help her settle in for her afternoon nap whenever we are hanging out together. It’s not unusual for me to fall asleep first and wake up after she does. The cuddle time is a great bonus. But nap.

Today I managed to get out of work a bit early and one would think I could fill the time with errands or alternatively other self-care rituals — yoga or some meditation. I could have even snuck in a mani-pedi, hey, today was payday after all! But nope.

I came home, grabbed some food, and went straight to the serious nap. You know the one I mean? The take-your-bra-off-climb-into-your-bed nap, not just the lay-down-on-the-couch-while-you-have-the-TV-on nap. Three hours later I woke up unsure if I even wanted to get out of bed or just put on PJs and call it good.

Sleep is a vital part of our health. And most of us ignore it or in the case of many nurses — or other shift workers — bend their circadian rhythms until they are hardly recognizable.

My body has finally said enough. After all these years she is done with that mess. And I am finally wise enough to listen.
