What Social Isolation Has Taught Me About Photography

And What You Can Learn From It

I wrote a few weeks back about how to keep up with your photography during social isolation. And to a certain degree, I followed my own advice.
This week, I wanted to get into more detail about what social isolation has taught me about photography.

Nothing.

That’s what social isolation has taught me about photography.
Not one thing.

But it could have. And it’s my fault that it didn’t.

There are two things you could learn about photography while socially isolated.

Anything.
Everything.

I think we can all acknowledge that this sucks. And we’re not done yet. But it has also been an amazing opportunity if we just take advantage of it. The opportunity to learn and grow. No matter how experienced or inexperienced you are as a photographer, there are always things to learn.

And what better time to do that, than now.

Maybe cut out a couple of hours of Netflix and learn something new about photography.

Think about it. The last time society isolated itself was in 1918. No TV, No Internet.

Today, we have the width and breadth of all human knowledge at our fingertips. There are literally thousands of videos and tutorials on how to do anything with your camera. I have written quite a few here. And, with the money you are saving traveling and eating out, you could easily spring for one of the many paid tutorials available. There are many. One of my favorites is KelbyOne. But you find one that fits your style of learning and what you need to accomplish.

Spend a day carving out a corner of your home and set up a studio. Learn product or food photography and take a picture of everything in your house. You will learn more about controlling light in a tabletop setup than anywhere else.

Find a south-facing window and draft your partner, kids, or pet into being a model. Practice and perfect portrait lighting. You can easily spend weeks on that one subject alone.
