The passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the impending nomination for a new US Supreme Court justice, managing the spread of COVID-19, racial injustice, the threat of climate change, the rise of US authoritarianism, and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression are the biggest issues at the forefront of the election of 2020.

If the Senate flips, Democrats will have full control of the executive and legislative branches of government. Biden and the Democrats’ ascension to power could usher in the most influential, liberal policies since FDR. But what about the judicial branch?

Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation is highly likely, which will result in a 6–3 conservative majority. A conservative court could threaten certain rights such as affordable healthcare, gay marriage, and the ability to vote.

Democrats have discussed the option of packing the US Supreme Court and/or instituting term limits for Supreme Court Justices. But none of this can happen unless Democrats take back the Senate.

The Republicans currently hold 53 seats to the Democrats’ 47 seats in the US Senate. For this year’s election, Democrats need to flip 3 seats to maintain a Senate majority if Joe Biden wins — 4 seats if he loses. There is a clear path for Democrats to flip the Senate.
