12 Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me Before I Started Working

Early career life is painful.

Graduation didn’t feel like graduation to me.

I’ve always imagined it to be all smiles and splattering the skies with graduation hats. Or maybe that was just the stock photos.

Once I got back to my desk, it’s back to LinkedIn and Glassdoor. Submitting my resume into the endless oblivion of graduate roles with requirements of *two years' experience. What!?

But I landed one eventually.

And then I had my first day in the office.

And then I got yelled at, in front of others.

And then I learned the unspoken subtleties of the working culture.

And then I quit to find a better workplace.

The world of ‘trying to generate wealth’ can be brutal and filled with people trying to take advantage of you.

After making most of the mistakes, here are a few things that might help you.

You just came out of your university’s womb. Everybody is pointing at you, screaming: “Ahhhh, so cute!” Because you’re still in your honeymoon period and they know what’s about to come.

Your managers got to where they are by paying their dues. At least most of them did.

$50 textbooks can only teach you so much and TikTok knowledge doesn’t always translate to the real world. You don’t know what you don’t know.

Respect, trust, and credibility are earned, not asked.

If you want to make decisions, show everybody you have what it takes first. Nobody is going to take you seriously if you haven’t.

Stop questioning why.

…is to do it properly and see it through. It’s more important than doing it the right way.

It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it has to be done with quality. And don’t worry if it’s not loud or shiny enough, because your effort will show itself.
